EIN stands for Employer Identification Number, also known as a Federal Employer Identification Number or Federal Tax Identification Number, and is a unique nine-digit number assigned by the IRS to business entities operating in the United States for identification purposes. When this number is used only for identification and not for tax reporting, it is commonly referred to as a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), and when it is used for tax reporting, it is commonly referred to as an EIN.

What does an EIN number do for non-U.S. residents?

If you work in digital marketing and need to collect affiliate commissions, you can use an EIN number instead of an SSN number to submit tax forms

If you need to register a U.S. corporation license, you will need an EIN number.

If you need to sell items on Amazon or other US e-commerce platforms, you’ll need an EIN number.

If you need to publish an ebook on Amazon or Ibook, you also need to use an EIN number.

How to apply for an EIN number for non-US residents?

According to the IRS website, applying for an EIN is a free service provided by the IRS, and U.S. residents can apply for an EIN online, by fax or by mail, while non-U.S. residents can apply through the Foreign Service Line.

Whichever way you plan to apply, it’s a good idea to first download a copy of Form SS-4 to fill out, which is required to apply for an EIN.

During the call, the IRS will ask for your name, mailing address, type of applicant, the purpose of the EIN application, the date you started doing business, what type of services you primarily provide, and phone number, all of which are listed on the Form SS-4.

If your English is good, you can usually finish applying for an EIN in about 10 minutes.

The phone call starts with a hello, then IRS customer service asks the purpose of your call and tells him you need to apply for an Employer Identification Number.

Next, IRS customer service will ask for your name, mailing address, and other information on the SS-4 form. Finally, they will ask for your phone number and three additional questions, such as whether you will be doing anything related to gambling, and whether you will be employed in the U.S. Answer NO to all of them.

Then, IRS customer service will check your name and address with you, spell your name and address alphabetically, and then give you the EIN number directly after the check, and ask you to repeat it back to make sure the EIN number you heard is correct.

Finally, customer service read a statement telling you that the IRS would send an original EIN to the address you provided.

Apply for an EIN through Fiverr, it’s the easiest way to get an EIN.

If you have an SSN or ITIN, you can apply for an EIN online at the IRS website, and it usually takes about 10 minutes to hire a successful applicant and get a PDF file containing the EIN.
